Thing 12: Twitter

Okay, I set up my account on Twitter, but I don't know anyone using Twitter other than celebrities and people on the news. I don't really care to follow them. I will have to convince friends to join. Maybe I will entertain myself a bit with what Ellen is doing. She mentioned yestereday that she tweets.

Thing 11: Instant Messaging

I have used Yahoo Instant Messenger. I have found it to be a great communication tool while I am wasting time at the computer. I have yet to use it with my phone. Most of my friends have moved to Facebook, so they would not be available for chatting on IM.
I can see some uses for IM in the library, mostly as a communication between a patron at a computer station and the librarian. It could be a quick method for asking a question without leaving your computer. It could even be a way for teachers to communicate with the school librarian about resources or technical issues without the librarian leaving the library unattended.

Thing 10: Ning

I have never heard of Ning. I think that means I'm getting old, or maybe just too busy. I like the sound of the second one.
I didn't actually join Ning or a network on Ning, but I did check out a few. Here is what I found:
  • TeacherLibrarianNing - a great network of school librarians, it even has groups inside of the network like Instructional Technology and New SLMS's
  • Inspired Blueprints - a network for scrapbookers that includes a weekly sketch and uploaded pics of how the sketch was turned into a page
  • TCEA 2009 - a page of events, photos, and videos from TCEA 2009. I was disappointed to find advertisements for colon cleansing in the blog posts.

Thing 9: More Facebook

I belong to several groups already.
  • Frenship HS Alumni
  • Texas Tech Alumni
  • Delta Kappa Gamma
  • Love Granbury
  • Healthy Kids

I joined TLA and UNT-SLIS Unite today.

I remember when I first joined Facebook that it seemed hard to find people, but I think they have added some features that make it easier. I am always surprised by the people that graduated with me that I can't remember. We only had a class of 175, it shouldn't be that hard.

Thing 8: Facebook

I have had a Facebook account for a while now. I don't ever check my MySpace account anymore, because all of my friends are on Facebook. I use Facebook for a variety of reasons: to keep up with friends from high school and college, to keep up with organizations I belong to, and to network with other library students at UNT. I think Facebook is a great way to stay informed and to share information. The one thing I do resent is the millions of games that people play on it. I don't have time to throw Mardi Gras beads or tend to a farm. Maybe when I am retired?

Thing 7: RSS Feeds

Lee LeFever says to "be careful, it's addictive". That's for sure! I can't open my browser without checking my Google Reader to see what's new. I am actually disappointed when I have checked it for the third or fourth time and there is nothing new. :)

Thing 6: Blog Readers

I have already been following a few blogs through my personal blog, but I like the Google Reader application because I can also follow the blogs from my phone. The only drawback on the phone is that I can only see the last few blog entries. If I am far behind on reading, I might miss some on my phone. I like that I can see what others are reading.

Thing 5: Image Generators

Who needs Photoshop these days?
I edited this picture at Big Huge Labs. I used FX. It turned out so cute.

I can see so many posters hanging in my library from Comic Strip Generator. And birthday cards, too.
All of these are so easy to use.
